May 22, Travel Sketching Essentials at Daniel Smith

With summer fast approaching, I was inspired to finally do a demo at our local world headquarters for Daniel Smith!

I hope you can join me on May 22...I'll show and talk about all the materials I use for traveling (and I've tried it all!) and do a short painting demo on trees...  It's taken years to pare everything down to the light and small supplies I take...so please, spread the word!

PS--the photo is by Laurel Holmes (friend and wife of the amazing Marc Taro Holmes--typo correction coming soon on the DS website!) By then, I'll have a preview copy of my book to share too!

Join award-winning Seattle Architectural Illustrator, Teacher, Author, and Urban Sketcher Stephanie Bower to learn her best tools and tips for travel sketching. Stephanie has traveled the globe and will share some of her sketches from last summer's trips to Europe and Asia, talk about the light and portable materials she uses to to create her on location sketches, and will provide a brief demo of her pencil and watercolor technique.

Stephanie has vast teaching experience including a decade at Parsons in NYC, UW and Cornish College of the Arts. She teaches perspective and watercolor workshops in Seattle and Italy, at Urban Sketchers symposiums in Brazil, Singapore and this summer in Manchester, as well as a popular online course "Perspective for Sketchers" onCraftsy.com. People from around the globe follow her work on the international Urban Sketchers blog, Flickr, and Facebook, and her book, the fourth in the Urban Sketching Handbook series, Understanding Perspective, will be out in June. She is also a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society.

  1. Oh man - we'll be on vacation then and I can't come! I'm SO disappointed. But, I'll be using your framing technique (Hawaii sketch) and perspective lessons as I sketch for the first time while on vacation .... Myrtle Beach and Pompano Beach, FL, the Everglades - hopefully some fun sights to sketch! Sorry I'll miss your demo. :(

  2. Hi Stephanie, will your presentation and demo be video recorded so that people like me who live far far from Seattle (in the center of France actually) can still see it ? I would love this !
I take the opportunity of this post to say that I can't wait for your next Craftsy course ! If it's filmed in August, that means it will be available in october perhaps ? Have a very good day !

    1. Hi Marie-Cath, I don't think they film it, but that is certainly a good idea--I'll pass that on to the DS folks. If you ever have questions about materials, etc. you can always post them here...in fact, I will do a post on my materials after the presentation!! You gave me a great idea, thank you!
And that is so kind of you regarding the next Craftsy course...yes, it will likely come out in early October. I am filming pretty much the same week in August that I filmed last year! Just have to plan better this time for the altitude sickness in Denver (can you tell I was sick as a dog???)
      Thanks for your message~~
